Regular Board Meeting

Kahala Elementary School PTO

Tuesday Sept. 5, 2017

The Kahala Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization met in regular session on Tuesday September 5, 2017 at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School Library, 4559 Kilauea Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96816. Notice of the meeting was posted on the school website.

Board President Edie LaPorte called the meeting to order at 2:35 PM.

Present: Edie LaPorte (President), Holly Sheen (Secretary), Gail Weisz (Teacher Representative), Susan Kamida (Teacher Representative), Jayvee Austria (Member-at-Large), Julie Ho (Member-at-Large), Cathy Schultz (Member-at-Large).

Old Business

T-shirt Sales: Orders have been coming in nicely with total profits of $2,131.00 thus far. Having parents t-shirts printed on an "as wanted" basis is proving to be a good idea and will help prevent unused inventory.  The idea of having an aloha print shirt sale later in the year was discussed.

Kona Ice: The year's first Kona Ice sales were successful bringing in approximately $244.00. A few parents volunteered which helped to streamline the process for all involved. Using the pop-up tent for shade at the front of the truck would be helpful at the next event.

Foodland Give Aloha: The Foodland fundraiser is up and running. Signs have been made and displayed on campus. Parents have/will stand near drop off areas on each Friday in September to remind parents about the fundraiser. The idea of having older students hold signs was also discussed. The board discussed the need for the thermometers to track the percentage of participation in each classroom for the prize at the end of the drive. Principal Gardner also offered to purchase a large banner to hang near the cafeteria to create more awareness.

New Business

New Teacher Representatives: We are happy to welcome Gail Weisz and Susan Kamida as our Teacher Representatives.

Jamba Juice: Friday September 8 will be the first Jamba Juice fundraiser. Two parents will help manage the flow of students and the school pop-up tent will be used for shade.

Ohana Night: Ohana Night will be Friday September 22 from 6:00-8:00 PM. PTO will sale vintage aloha shirts and maybe water bottles. There will also be a teacher bake sale. Susan Kamida asked about parent participation in the bake sale, which is not required, but that we recommend a drop off time for baked goods in order for teachers to set up for the event. Items that were homemade sold best so donations should be homemade if possible.

Keiki Carnival: The Keiki Carnival will no longer be in October to allow more time for preparation. A few different dates were proposed in January and February. The board agreed that February 9 would work well as it is the start of a three-day weekend. This recommendation will be passed on to Principal Gardner.

President’s Report:  There was nothing to report at this time.

Treasurer’s Report: There was nothing to report at this time.

Teacher Representative Report: Gail Weisz announced that the first Book Fair of the year will be held October 23-27, which is Parent Teacher Conference week.  At least two parent volunteers will be needed to operate 2 cash registers.

Principal’s Report: Principal Gardner alerted us to three new employees recently hired at Kahala; Solomon Evangelista as custodian, Dionne Asui in administration and Lynn Rakmil as a part-time math teacher.

Edie LaPorte motioned to adjourn the meeting at 3:09PM, with a second from Holly Sheen.

Edie LaPorte announced that the next PTO meeting will be held on Monday, October 2, 2017 at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School Library.
