Monday, November 6, 2017

The Kahala Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization met in regular session on Monday, November 6, 2017, at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School Library, 4559 Kilauea Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96816. Notice of the meeting was posted on the school website.

Board President Edie LaPorte called the meeting to order at 2:40 PM.

Present: Edie LaPorte (President), Holly Sheen (Secretary), Kinau Gardner (Principal), Gail Weisz (Teacher Representative), Susan Kamida (Teacher Representative).

Old Business

  1. Kona Ice: The next shave ice truck will be Wed., Nov. 29, 2017.

  1. Jamba Juice: The next Jamba Juice will be Fri., Nov. 17, 2017.

  1. Foodland Give Aloha: This fundraiser was very successful and we were able to reach our goal of over $10,000.

New Business

  1. Regal Foods: This is a quick fundraiser. It started Nov. 3 and concludes Nov. 7.  We have had parents request more tickets and have had some parents not want to participate. Teachers have requested tickets to sell or wanting to buy tickets. Dale will hold on to a ticket packet in the main office for teachers to purchase if interested. December 14th in the pick-up date for items sold. Lyons will be sending volunteers to help distribute items potentially. We may need a few more parent volunteers that day as well. Edie and Holly will need master lists to cross-check for item pick up.

  1. Carnival: We will be collecting items for the Carnival flea market and starting to price and organize. A room will be available soon for us to store items donated. Room parents will be used to help orchestrate donations and facilitate communication with classrooms.

  1. Turkey Trot: Fliers went home for parent volunteers. We won’t be having Kalani kids helping to set things up for the event so we will be needing more helpers on that day. We may have some military helpers that day.

  1. Kahala Very Merry: $5 tickets are sold for those interested in this event. It is an event at Kahala Mall. People interested in purchasing tickets can buy them in the office. Stores at the mall have special discounts for those attending and ticket purchasers are entered into a raffle for prizes. Fliers will go home in Thursday’s folders (no school on Friday).

  1. Golf Tournament: Edie has met with 3 different golf courses. Royal Hawaiian may be too difficult a course and requires a minimum of 72 players. Mid-Pac is desirable but quite pricey. We would need to charge $160 or $170 in order to make a profit.  Hawaii Kai course has different price levels, $75, $85 or $95, and all include two meals. The minimum number of players needed would be 108  on a weekday or 120 on a weekend.   Includes golf balls, a putter and complimentary golf that could be raffled off as additional prizes. A deposit is needed 60 days before the tournament date. We discussed offering more prizes for a raffle. Hawaii Kai seems to be the best value for what is offered and for the price.  We are aiming for a date in April to have the tournament. Edie will be following up.

President’s Report: The owner of Olive Tree contacted Edie and is a Kahala alumni. He would like to have a food booth at carnival and may do the food at spring Ohana Night. He would also like to donate computers or tablets to the school. He will also donate gift certificates to Turkey Trot for the winners.

Treasurer’s Report: There is nothing to report at this time.

Teacher Representative Report: Gail followed up on the birthday books program. She will send another flier home in this Thursday’s folder.

Principal’s Report: Principal Gardner invited all students to march in the Kaimuki Christmas parade on Thursday, December 7. Meet at St. Louis High School and walk Waialae Ave. Those interested in participating should plan to meet around 5:00 pm that evening. A flyer will be going home with more information. There will be an Hour of Code in the Library during December as an introduction to computer coding.  Aina with be hosting a Make & Take Christmas activity Thursday, Dec. 14. For a suggested donation of $5 participants can make herb salt, Kvees tonic, homemade body scrub, toothpaste and upcycled gift tags.

Edie LaPorte motioned to adjourn the meeting at 3:38 PM, with a second from Holly Sheen.

Edie LaPorte announced that the next PTO meeting will be held on Monday, December 4, 2017, at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School Library.
