Regular Board Meeting

Kahala Elementary School PTO

Monday, January 22, 2018

The Kahala Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization met in regular session on January 22, 2018 at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School Library, 4559 Kilauea Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96816. Notice of the meeting was posted on the school website.

Board President Edie LaPorte called the meeting to order at 2:50 PM.

Present: Edie LaPorte (President), Holly Sheen (Secretary), Kinau Gardner (Principal), Gail Weisz (Teacher Representative), Susan Kamida (Teacher Representative).

Old/Current Business:

  1. Keiki Carnival - We are still in need of more manpower. We need tables, tents, coolers (bigger the better), ladders potentially, and we need to track down dowels or long poles for clothing display. We need parent volunteers for the 3:30-5:30 shift in particular. We need more supervision for the inflatables. We need a master list of who needs to be where for volunteer purposes. We need people to cover four shifts the day of starting at 1:30 and ending at 6:30. Lyons will be sending a few support volunteers as well. We can start setting up in the cafeteria after lunch on Thursday for the rummage sale. Breakfast will still be taking place on Friday. Mary will be bringing volunteers from St. Louis High School as well as people to help with the food and game booths. We need to purchase glitter tattoo supplies and crazy hairspray supplies and find someone to man that booth as well.  An email will be going out this evening asking for parent volunteers and requiring each family to donate at least one hour of time during carnival.

  2. Regal Foods - Our profits from this fundraiser totalled a little over $10,000. We will be considering doing a second Regal Food sale in the Spring with four different products.

New Business

  1. Credit Card machine - We will now be able to use a credit card machine for fundraisers and other activities. The credit card machine will not be kept on campus and we will only have access to it when we have an event. We will need to alert the bank when we will be needing the machine next, probably for Sprint Ohana Night ticket sales.

  1. Golf Tournament - At next meeting we will be talking about how best to get the word out to the businesses and others in the community who may be interested in participating so we don’t have to rely on Kahala parents. If we don’t get enough interest, we have 30 days to cancel prior to the event to get our deposit back. We will plan to reach out to the community in February after Carnival is over. The tournament is scheduled for April 20th.

  1. Coffee mornings -  We would like to do 4 PTO sponsored coffee mornings throughout the year to make parents more aware of upcoming events and functions and have more face time to interact with parents who may be able to volunteer. Our hope is that Principal Gardner will be able to make an appearance at these events to encourage parents to come. We will propose dates at the February meeting for these to occur.

President’s Report - Nothing to report at this time
