Regular Board Meeting

Kahala Elementary School PTO

Monday, February 8, 2018

The Kahala Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization met in regular session on February 8, 2018 at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School Library, 4559 Kilauea Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96816. Notice of the meeting was posted on the school website.

Board President Edie LaPorte called the meeting to order at 2:25 PM.

Present: Edie LaPorte (President), Holly Sheen (Secretary), Kinau Gardner (Principal), Gail Weisz (Teacher Representative), Susan Kamida (Teacher Representative).

Old/Current Business:

  1. Keiki Carnival - The carnival made about $18,000 total. Our half should be about $10,000. We discussed maybe having more public advertising next year well in advance of the event to promote a larger attendance from the community.

    1. Rummage sale: Overall the Rummage sale went well, especially for being our first year. There are a few things we could rework for next year; having specified drop off days and times for people to make their donations, possibly have it on a separate day from the carnival, price things a little lower, make more announcements for the sale going on, try to find a room we can use to store and set things up in instead of having to move things into the cateria, etc. Edie found out that we can take all the items left over from the sale and drop them off at Savers and they will pay us based on the poundage.

    2. Food: All food sales went well and all vendors seemed happy about participating next year. We purchased the right amount of skewers. We seemed to have the right amount of food options. Maybe one more food booth option would be a good idea for next year, possibly Panda Express or South Shore Grill. Some juice and water cases were left over and ice cream bars were donated.

  2. The next Jamba Juice day will be February 16th.

  3. The next Kona Shave Ice day will be February 28th.

New Business

  1. We will be having another Regal Food Fundraiser in place of School Kine Cookies. This fundraiser will offer 2 cookie options, a four-pack of hot dog manapua, and a sweet Hawaiian sausage. The sale will begin March 2nd and run thru March 27th. Pick up will be on April 19th from 2:30-5:30.

  2. Coffee mornings - We will be trying a new event to help promote a greater sense of community among parents and help spread more awareness of upcoming PTO events. We will be hosting the first one on Friday, March 2nd from 7:30 - 8:30 in the cafeteria.

  3. Spring Ohana Night - We will be asking Mr. McCarthy do an announcement for performance etiquette in the hopes of having some quiet during performances. South Shore Grill may be able to cater the event. We are just waiting to hear back from him. The event will be held Friday, March 9th. We will be charging approximately $15 for adult meals, $7.50 for kids meals, and offering Teapresso drinks for purchase as well. Our goal is to make about $3.50 on kids meals and $4-5 on adults. Fliers will be going home in Friday folders.

  4. Golf Tournament - $2500 deposit is due which can be refunded as long as we back out by March 20. We need to have 120 players sign up for the event to happen. Fliers will be going home shortly and hopefully we can distribute some in surrounding communities.

  5. Vision screening will be held on March 7th starting at 8:15 AM.

  6. Ms. Nakata’s class used funds from winning the Regal Foods fundraiser to have some performers come to the school and perform a Lion Dance. All classes will be attending the performance which will be held at the school in the cafeteria at 1:30 PM.

  7. Career day will be held on February 28th.
