Regular Board Meeting

Kahala Elementary School PTO

Monday, December 4, 2017

The Kahala Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization met in regular session on December 4, 2017, at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School Library, 4559 Kilauea Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96816. Notice of the meeting was posted on the school website.

Board President Edie LaPorte called the meeting to order at 2:33 PM.

Present: Edie LaPorte (President), Holly Sheen (Secretary), Kinau Gardner (Principal), Gail Weisz (Teacher Representative), Jana Staggs, (Member-at-Large), Sudi Davis (Member-at-Large).

Old Business

  1. Kona Ice - Still going well each month.

  1. Jamba Juice - The next Jamba Juice will be Dec. 8, 2017. January 12, 2018, will be the next one and Edie will be out of town. Jana and Holly will man the tables with Julie.

  1. Regal Foods - We have been pleasantly surprised at how well the ticket sales have gone. We are still trying to track down outstanding tickets and a targeted letter went home to those who have yet to turn in tickets and/or money. So far we have made approximately $9,800 in profit. Pick up day will be December 14th right after school from 2:30-5:30. We need 15-18 people to help distribute items. Lyon’s club will be able to offer 2-4 helpers. An email will be sent asking for 10 more parent volunteers

  1. Kahala Very Merry - We made $460 off these ticket sales.

New Business

  1. Carnival - Flier went home in the Friday folders. We will be having a big push to get people to drop off household items between now and a few days prior to the carnival.  We will probably need a cut-off date for donations. The room set aside for storing donations will be F2. Families can drop off items over winter break as the main office will be open most days of break. We need to come up with a name for the rummage sale. We need at least 20 volunteers for the rummage sale. Principal Gardner will work on getting volunteers for the games and inflatables. Overstaffing is a good idea. A specific flier asking in what way each family plans to contribute will be going home at the beginning of the new year. We will have access to the cafeteria the night before the carnival set-up. There are many incentives for participation.  The class who first achieves 100% participation will get to have a CPK party at Kahala Mall.  There are also 5 $100 gift cards for the teachers who achieve 100% classroom participation. Corporate sponsor form and donation form will be going home soon. We will be needing bins, hangers, and racks for the rummage sale.

  1. Golf Tournament - We will be having a booth at the carnival for people to sign up for the golf tournament. We need to solidify the date for Hawaii Kai and are leaning toward Friday, April 20, 2018.

  1. Kaimuki Parade - There is a waiver for parents to sign in the office if their child will be participating in the parade. Kahala Elementary will be number 18 in the parade. Hula girls will be performing and we will be carrying a banner and there will be glow sticks for the kids.

  1. Take & Make Activity - This event will be held the same day as the Regal Foods pick up as a fundraiser for Aina in Schools in the cafeteria. Suggested donation is $5.

  1. Valentine’s Day - We discussed potentially doing Valentine’s grams with carnations.  We will revisit this in January

President’s Report - Edie will be out of town starting December 21st - January 20th.

We will be having the next meeting Monday, January 22, 2018.

Treasurer report - Nothing to report at this time.

Teacher Representative Report - Gail talked about doing Ozobots with each grade level and that it was very popular and successful. Some of the older kids were able to assist the younger kids with coding and understanding how they work.

Principal’s Report - 5th graders will be doing Keiki Crunchies as a fundraiser. PTO will deposit the money and manage writing a check to offset the cost of an upcoming field trip. Principal Gardner would like to have credit card capabilities for future events, especially for carnival donations. She mentioned that in December the school has many school drills, including a mass evacuation drill, a shelter in place drill and a lockdown drill.

Edie LaPorte motioned to adjourn the meeting at 3:32 PM, with a second from Holly Sheen.

Edie LaPorte announced the next PTO meeting will be held on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School LIbrary.
