Regular Board Meeting

Kahala Elementary School PTO

Monday, October 2, 2017

The Kahala Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization met in regular session on Monday, October 2, 2017, at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School Library, 4559 Kilauea Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96816. Notice of the meeting was posted on the school website.

Board President Edie LaPorte called the meeting to order at 2:35 PM.

Present: Edie LaPorte (President), Christa Braun-Inglis (Treasurer), Holly Sheen (Secretary), Kinau Gardner (Principal), Gail Weisz (Teacher Representative), Jana Staggs (Member-at-large).

  1. Old Business:

    1. Ohana Night: The evening was a huge success. We made $1155.00 from teacher’s bake sale. The money was delivered to Foodland and we had it matched through the Give Aloha fundraiser. T-shirts and vintage Aloha wear were also sold by PTO, totaling $550.

    2. Kona Ice: The two Shave Ice sales have been successful. 2-3 parent volunteers really help to make things more efficient and to watch the syrup distribution.

    3. Jamba Juice: The first sale had too few smoothies and the second had a little too much inventory. Inventory request has been adjusted accordingly and Jamba at Kahala Mall will be available if extras are needed. 2 parent volunteers will be needed at each booth to help with the sales.

    4. Foodland Give Aloha: We will have the final amount donated in a few days as the sale ended on October 1st at Midnight. No extension of the fundraiser has been discussed.

  1. New Business

    1. Regal Foods: This will be the first year for this fundraiser. It runs November 3 - November 17. Items to be sold will be cinnamon bread, banana macadamia nut loaf, pizzas and Portuguese sausage. Ticket envelopes will be in the Friday folder prior to November 3. Profit is $2.70 per ticket/item sold. There are incentives for the top individual seller and top-selling homeroom. A raffle drawing held at the end of the sale as well. PTO will make $300 at a minimum. December 14 will be pick up day for items sold. Lions Club will be assisting that day, but we will need parents to be runners/distributors as well.

    2. Carnival: Carnival will be held January 26. We are partnering with Kids for a Cause and our sharing partner is the Ronald McDonald House. November 1st will be the official launch date and information will begin to go home to parents. The cafeteria will be turned into a large store. We will be asking families to donate household items to be sold at the carnival. Principal Gardner has designated classroom F-2 as a space to store items people will be donating beginning in November. Edie and Holly will spend time each week keeping inventory and categorizing incoming donations. Anything that doesn’t sell will be donated. Fliers will go home asking each family for a $50 donation. Non-Kahala families will be asked to pay for entry. Kahala kids get in an hour before the rest of the public. At November meeting we will start assigning committees to head different sections of the carnival.

    3. Book Fair: Volunteers can potentially sign up online. The hours prior to school and right after school are the most crucial. The book fair will be held the week of Parent Teacher Conferences (October 23- October 27) and is open until 3:00 PM most days and stays open late one day for parents picking up from A+.

  2. President’s Report: Edie has a connection at the Royal Hawaiian Golf Course and will be exploring the option of having a golf tournament in the spring. Potential dates were discussed for late March or early April. Principal Gardner will confirm potential dates and Edie will be obtaining more information.

  3. Treasurer’s Report - There was nothing to report at this time.

  4. Teacher Representative Report - There was nothing to report this time.

  5. Principal’s Report - Principal Gardner discussed wanting Kahala teachers and staff to start working toward National Board Certification. She proposed having three teachers begin the process this year and having PTO front the money for the application and test fees. If the teacher passes the exam,  the amount paid is reimbursed. She suggested having a regenerating amount of $1500-2000 set aside in the PTO fund in order to sponsor teachers. The Board thinks this is a great idea and will work with Principal Gardner to get this underway.

Edie LaPorte motioned to adjourn the meeting at 3:31 PM, with a second from Holly Sheen.

Edie LaPorte announced that the next PTO meeting will be held on Monday, November 6, 2017, at 2:30 PM in the Kahala Elementary School Library.
